How to Read the Posts

  • For each hike, I’ve noted the length, elevation gained, and time. All are based on my specific route. Times vary by the speed of the group and can easily be faster or slower. My times include all breaks. The elevation gained is the sum of all of the “ups” along my route, not the difference between the elevation of the summit and the trailhead.

  • Views from summits are highly subjective, and vary from one day to the next. One day a hike may look amazing, but not another based on conditions at the time. Vegetation changes over time alter views. Therefore, I do NOT to include view ratings from the summits. My descriptions and photos describe what I saw on the day that I hiked the mountain.

  • I do not rank the difficulty of each climb. What is difficult for one person, may not be for another. Mood, level of fitness, and experience level at the time significantly impact how difficult a hike may be. I’ll leave it to the narrative to provide my personal impressions at the time.

Credits

  • First and foremost, credit absolutely goes out to all of my hiking companions who made these trips so enjoyable, taught me so much, and and helped me through the tough spots.

  • Although the majority of the photos included here are my own, there are a significant number of photos and videos that were provided to me by my hiking companions, when I lacked images to fill in some of the hikes. Thank you so much  to all those who contributed, and for allowing me to use their material.

  • Special thanks to my daughter Sam for being such a tremendous help with assisting and guiding me to put together this website.

  • I used the AllTrails smartphone apps to help plan many of my hikes and generate some statistics. I also used it for the map images of routes that I’ve included with each of the hike descriptions. When downloaded to smartphone (due to frequent lack of cell service in the High Peaks), this can be a life saver, but always bring a paper map with you! You never know if your cell phone will die on the trail. A very special thank you to the makers of AllTrails and to the all who contribute to it!
